Who Can Migrate?
Australia has a robust and proactive immigration policy. Its migrant program is focused on attracting skilled people from all over the world to come and settle in Australia. The humanitarian program is part of Australia's contribution to the UN in assisting refugees and people displaced worldwide and need of humanitarian assistance.
In the current financial year (2005-2006), there were about 120,000 places under the migrant program and about 13,000 people were accepted under the Humanitarian program.
The current migrant program has a strong focus on attracting skilled people and people who agree to live in regional Australia.
The Migrant program enables people willing to move and settle in Australia to become permanent residents (and later Australian citizens). It can broadly be classified into the following categories:
Besides the permanent migration of people to Australia, DIMIA also administers and regulates the entry and stay of temporary workers, students and visitors, to the country. Today Australia welcomes over 1 million temporary visitors to the country every year.
