Parent Migration
Parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens can apply for migration to Australia both as a permanent resident and temporary resident. Due to the high demand for visa under this category, the government introduced the contributory parent category visas from March 2003.
All types of parent visas are capped per year. Every year there are more than 3 times more number of visas available under the contributory parent category than the parent category visa. Applicants under contributory category are required to make a substantially higher contribution towards their future health costs.
Basic requirements for parent visas
- You must be parent of a child who is an Australian citizen, Permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Your child must be settled in Australia (at least 2 years) and must sponsor you.
- You must pass the balance of family test – i.e at least half of your children must live in Australia, or you must have more children in Australia than any other single country.
- Your sponsor will have to provide an acceptable Assurance of support bond.
There are 4 types of permanent visas for parents:
- Parent Visa
- Contributory Parent Visa
- Aged Parent Visa
- Contributory Aged Parent Visa
