Tourists (and visitors)
Tourists are people who come to Australia to travel, sightsee, undertake leisure activities or visit friends or relatives.
There are 2 types of tourist visas available
- Short Stay (max. 3 months)
- Long Stay for visit upto 6 months (and in few cases for 12 months)
Citizens of some countries can get an ‘electronic travel authority’ (ETA) instead of being issued a visa in their passport. This can be applied online, or through a travel agent or in some cases at the airport of departure.
Conditions that apply
- The applicant intends to come to Australia either:
- To visit an Australian citizen or PR who is their parent, spouse, child, brother or sister, or
- As a tourist;
- Is not coming for business purposes or medical treatment
- Is a genuine visitor
- Have access to adequate funds for support
- Cannot work or study while in Australia
- Meet health, character and public interest criteria.
Friends and relatives
Australian citizens and residents can help friends and relatives who are applying for a visitors visa by sending them a letter or statutory declaration stating
- The name and address of the applicant and any dependents traveling with them and the name and address of the person in Australia who is willing to support their application;
- The kind of support the Australian friend/relative can offer (accommodation, meals etc.)
- Details of the Australian friend/relative’s current employment and income;
- An undertaking that the Australian friend/relative will provide support.
This letter should be sent to the applicant overseas, who should attach it to their visa application.
There is however a separate visa available for people who are formally sponsored by an Australian citizen or resident.
